KotOR - best PC game ever.
Yeah, yeah, I know. You all played it ages ago.
So sue me.
This is, quite possibly, the best PC game of all time.
It's been so long since I played Elite that I hesitate to compare them. I did play the Freelancer(that was the Microsoft space RPG/Adventure/Combat game, right?) Demo, and it was good, but this is just pure joy.
It would be just as good if it weren't in the SW universe, that's just extra geekgasm-y goodness.
Story: Awesome
Interface: Pretty good, though the automation makes it really easy to ignore.
Artwork: Stunning. Immersive. Believable.
Animation: Mostly top notch. Some of the mouths are funky, especially when speaking, and as always, lip syncing is hard.
Combat: Holy mother of all that is holy, this is beautiful! First, it's pseudo-turn-based it seems. Like EQ. I call it "tick" based, not sure what the rest of the world calls it, but it's even better than Turn-based, as it allows you to leave your disbelief suspended because the "action" never stops, yet us old dudes aren't fumbling to keep up with realtime twitchy combat, which I don't really like in an RPG.
Edit: See, the tick-based was so great, I for the other awesome thing about combat - the animations. Good, these are good, at least in melee. Gunfights are ok, but getting up close and going toe to toe is just so well done, artistically, technically. It keeps the whole thing looking like a movie instead of being yanked out of the tale for a combat vignette. Wunderbar!
I'm not far in. I just got invited to a party. (Edited that sentence a few times to avoid spoiling, in case I'm not the last person on the planet to play this one.) Everything about the game, though, it AAA. Is there such a thing as AAAA? There should be.
If you haven't played this keep your eyes open. I recently saw it for under $15 in a circular, I think. And worth double that, easily, even being "old". Go. Now. Buy it. Or if it's sitting on your stack, install it now. Now, I said! Sleep is for the weak!
It crashed just after I got invited to the party. Yes, I patched it. I think it was X-fire. That thing causes more problems for me than anything else.
Thank you slambie!!!

I got KOTOR free with Doom III and I''ve yet to install it. I keep meaning to get around to it but I just have too many games to play. Once again, I''m sure tempted to fire it up now though.
I'm still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
I want this game. My computer at university doesn''t play many games, however. On my 4 month summer break I will most likely buy it. I love RPG''s and this sounds very cool.

I''m one of the 3-4 people in the world that wasn''t that thrilled by KOTOR. I played it through to the end, but it isn''t in the top 5 games I''ve played this year.
I just finished it about a month ago, and it''s definitely one of the best games I''ve ever played.

I played the Xbox game the whole way through... The only negative things I can say is that (the plot twist is sorta predictable) and the end guy is much too hard compared to every other battle in the game. I know end game bosses are supposed to be hard... but there''s somethign to be said about making aplayer NOT save and reload 83 times before they can kill the end guy. Oh and The Dark Side rules
WOW: Bounce
The only time i had a problem beating him is when I played a light side rouge/consular. My character was a bit weedy. I usually whack as many modifiers into strength as possible. Force immunity is a life-saver also.
I love this game! I''ve played it through a ton of times. the only real let down I have found is that the darkside options in conversation are so obvious that you''re embarrassed to select them. I''ve still got to go through and complete the game on the Dark Side.
Got KoToR 2 pre ordered, i dont know if you''ve seen any of the demo movies on the lucas arts site, but they have added loads of new combat animations! There is a screen shot floating around of a Jedi character doing a cool back-flippy sabre slice jobbie. Pretty cool!
EDIT::
Found the picture of the cool back-flippy sabre slice jobbie
Apparently, you get a new animation when you advance a feat, so a standard flurry doesnt look as cool as a master flurry.
I''m so excited!
It was fantastic. I really regret selling my copy on eBay after I played through it a couple times
I just hope the sequel isn''t a rushed hack job.

Yeah, It''s pretty badass. Best Star Wars experience since watching Jedi in the theater @ 7 years old. Better than Zahn, better than the Disney ride, better than... hell, I don''t know, I was kinda reaching with the Disney ride.
EDIT: Scratch that... Playing TIE Fighter for the first time was just as great as KotOR.
If you just got invited to a party, ducki, then you definitely aren''t far. Taris has a bunch of ""extra"" stuff to do, so just be patient with it, because you haven''t even come close to scratching the surface of the meat of the story. Enjoy the ride. Oh, and Dark Side definitely rules.

Fantastic game, agreed. Now if they can only make the combat deeper than a puddle and provide a difficulty setting that ensures that I actually have to use some sort of strategy, I''ll be in for #2.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Now go play its Grand daddy; Baldurs Gate, Baldurs Gate II and the other infinity engine games. Then come back and tell us which one you think really is the best PC game ever.
CRPG = Rare but tasty.

Also I recommend not leveling up at all until you become a jedi...Yeah its hard in the beginning but its worth it to get all the cool powers at the end

I''ve never thought of doing this. Does it unbalance the game at all? Id imagine being a level 19 jedi <whatever> would be pretty powerful.
And I thought I was the only one still yet to play this game.
It took until a few weeks ago for its price to drop down to the $20 or so I''ll shell out, but it''s been on my to-get list for what seems like a year by now.
Once I finish getting though the PoP: Sands of Time I got on the same shopping trip, I''m planning to start this one, so having no spoilers is appreciated.

As far as story-driven RPGs go:
FF7 > KOTOR (barely) > Fable.
Hands down I think Final Fantasy Seven and KOTOR have the most interesting, engrossing plot.
It''s a game where you actually play through it because you want to see what happens next. Rare, though I did do this from time to time in Fable, as I thought that the story line wasn''t nearly as thin as folks made it out to be.

Wow, that game got to you really fast. Glad you''re enjoying it duckilama.
I thought KOTOR was a very good game but it didn''t quite reach the top-notch level for me. Other than the camera controls taking some time to get the hang of, I think it was just the story more than anything that didn''t grab me by the seat of the pants. Don''t know why, but I''ve never been a big Star Wars fan. Still, it did keep me interested enough to play it all the way through.

Not any more than simply being a Jedi unbalances the game. That''s why the game couldn''t go multiplayer. The Jedi were designed to be billy-badass mofo''s that could take down waves of opponents with little to no threat to his own life. It''s even better when you can do that multiple life-drain plus force storm on a group of enemies. Absolutely brutal, which is why Dark Side was so much fun.
Good call, paint! Take note of that, ducki. Hold your level-ups for as long as you can. If you can stay level 2 until you multi-class to Jedi, you will be very thankful for it later.

Potential NWN Spoiler -
If Bioware does the same sh*t in KotOR that they did in NWN, I''m gonna be a bit pissed. If you played, you know what I mean, and you''ll agree they need someone else coming up with the storylnes, or at least the dramatic mechanisms. I''ll be pissed.
I''ve tried to get into BG at least a half-dozen times. Doesn''t do it for me. Mostly it''s mechanical. Hate the gameplay. I''d bet the story is good, but I can''t get past having to work at it to play it. KotOR is miles better.
On the Spire, there was a door through which it would not let me pass until I levelled up. I think I''m level 3 Soldier now, but since I already knew it was going to be similar to multiclassing in NWN, I had planned to stop around 3 or 4 anyway.
Man, I tried to play FF7, too, and absolutely hated it. Hated the combat, hated the cinematics, hated the characters, hated the messianic crap, hated IT. In fact, I was really glad that I got stuck fairly early on but pissed that I paid $17 for it used at Blockbuster and they only gave me a couple bucks back for it a few days later. I hated it. Give me a western RPG any day.
On the saving levels for later, I''m leaning towards Light, and I''m a soldier, and it''s my first attempt at playing. I''m not really worried about min-maxing because the story and world are engaging, engrossing, and immersive... I stayed up until 1 last night playing.(God, I''m glad it''s JO night, so I can get to bed at a reasonable hour.
)
On my second playing - I can already tell there will be another - I''ll go with a Scout or Scoundrel then a Dark Side Consular.
Yeah, slambie, it was way faster than I expected. Did you really end up paying twice on shipping what you quoted me, or do you have a merchant-type account where you pay less than what is posted on the box?
If you''ve been holding out on this one, I can''t recommend it highly enough, and you should be able to find it at $15 or so if you keep your eyes open. I won''t be selling my copy any time soon.

I didn''t like this one either. I barely got onto the first planet and couldn''t take it anymore. I didn''t like the choose your own adventure story. I mean the choices were obvious and silly. ''Feed the dog Alpo or Kick Him?'' Also no hands-on combat. Long and frequent load times. I like Fable much better.
I''ve been picking up a piece of the tab on the larger boxes that have gone out to keep things within the realm of reason. Nobody wants to pay $10 for a game, then pay almost that much again just to get it to them. It''s just one of the little ""value added"" perks for my customers.

As a satisfied Slambie customer, I can say that:
YOU ROCK
Just got the package last night, and my wife was like-who is slambie, and why is she being so NICE? She sent you all of that?
