Is available here at Fileplanet. If this is compatible with the GoG versions of BG1 & 2, then holy crap. This is almost as good as having BG3. Or even a decent sequel.

Sounds interesting, but requires 30gig of hard disk space to setup according to the readme file

I'll maybe need to clear out some stuff before looking at this I think...

The readme seems to be enhancing the truth. If you run the small setup file (RAR self extractor) it has a different readme which says the install size depends on what you choose, and also that it doesn't need BG 1 and 2 together, if I'm reading it right.

edit: This setup thing is quite slick.
edit2: Make sure you install to something like \BGII - SoA, the second bit messes up otherwise.

Is it actually any good? I tried a few fan made add-ons in the past and they were not.

I played a bit of BG1 last summer when gog.com raised goodjer awareness of it again, but hit a wall. I wouldn't mind a reboot again if this is worthwhile. Looking forward to hearing some reviews.

I'd be curious to see some video footage of this one in action. BG2 was a legendary game and I'd love to have something like that again with today's graphics.

Started trying to install this this morning before work but chickened out because I don't think I would have had enough time.

One thing that concerns me is that the preperation work required doesn't match up with the file directory in the GoG version of BG 2 (there's no CD5 folder, for example) but I'll try it later to see if it works.

If not I guess I'll have to dust off one of my boxed copies and give that a go.

No idea if it's good or not, but there are instructions for installing it using the GoG.com version.

It's going to be a while before I ever have time to play BG 1/2 again, but when I do, it's great to know I have these waiting. The BG series after all these years keeps giving back. It's amazing.

True. I still remember my first day with BG1. I picked it up on Friday after work, and my girlfriend picked up burgers and beer, then we proceeded to play it til the dawn of Saturday. Good times. Glad I married her.

I have really been thinking of playing BGI - BGII again. And then I remember I have two small kids at home, a massively impacted career, and a couple of other hobbies I'd like to enjoy this year.

Such an AWESOME and truly epic set of games.

Not yet, I was waiting for the weekend in case installing it turns into an epic adventure all of it's own accord. I'll have a stab at it later on the "recommended" install setting.

Is BG1 mandatory for the install? I already finished it but not BG2 so i was thinking of just installing it for BG2 gameplay? Would it make more sense to just install the BG2 mods separately?

No, just enter a minus - into the box for the BG1 path.

They should do BGII for the iPad. I'm playing Avadon right now, and the iPad is a great way to play old school RPGs. All these RPGs I've purchased on GOG and never played -- I'd love to see them on iOS.

Anyway, back on topic: I'd love to hear impressions on this. I started BGII then leant my discs to someone. Thinking about picking up BGI+II if they go on sale during the 'Staycation'.

ok, installing it properly now I think

glad I didn't do this on a day where I need to get up early the next morning...this looks like it could take a while

or not...seems to have gotten stuck and frozen on a file. damnit!
or maybe it's just taking a REALLY long time on this one file...I'll leave it running in the background for a while to see what happens.

...starting to wonder if I should just stick with vanilla BG1/2 and use the widescreen/trilogy mods.

I did.

In the end I just reinstalled a fresh copy of BG2 and used the Trilogy mod (which funnily enough is the one the big installer stuck on) to combine both games and then applied the widescreen mod. It's been long enough since I last played either game that there'll be MORE than enough content to keep me going for a while

Also : BG1 looks freakin' great at 1920x1080 with the BG2 interface/trappings.

One thing, though: you'd better absolutely love 2E D&D combat, because that's what you'll be doing for a hundred hours or so.

Boy, they sure did a good job with the high-level stuff, too, especially mages. Liches are scary as f*ck.

Are you going to play BG1 first and then roll into BG 2? How does combining the two work with the trilogy mod?

Or as I like to call it - the last time D&D was actually any good

SpyNavy wrote:

It literally combines the three into one epic game by pulling all the BG1, Tales and ToB content into BG2 proper. Which means you use BG2 rules, interface, character creation (with all the class kits and new classes like the Sorcerer), etc and it looks a LOT better.

The only thing that's a little screwed up is the music, but there's various levels of patch included to fix that.

I finally got this sucker installed. Started up a game starting at BG1. Seems to work fine and I've already got myself a pet wolf. I'm liking this already.

Will report back when I actually play some more (bugs and all), but I'm heading out for breakfast now.
