New Music.
Ok...when I say "New", I don't necessarily mean "Recent".
Here's the background: Because of a music streaming service that I subscribe to (Rhapsody), I've recently discovered some artists/albums that I usually never would have thought that I'd enjoy. I've since purchased some albums (Seriously, RIAA, the mp3 thing helps your sales. Wake up), and have been happy to find some artists that are "New" to me.
Case in point: The new Green Day album "American Idiot". If you know me, you'll know it's not really my style. However, I listened to it the other day and really found that I enjoyed it. Definitely much better than their eariler "Don't give a crap" style of punk.
Other artists that I've found I really enjoy:
Chris Whitley (Wow...what a seriously virtuoso dobro player, great singer), Cake (Funny, smart songwriting), Ben Folds (again, great songwriting).
Point is, without this service, I probably would have never bothered "listening outside the box", so to speak. Anybody have a similar experience?

I recently picked up Steriogram. Yeah, kind of MTV-punkish, but I still like it. Give it a listen on iTunes or your favorite streaming service.
Ben Folds is awesome. I''m interested to check out the new William Shatner album that Folds produced...I''m excited and terrified of it all at once.

Daily. Rhapsody -- similar to how my HD DVR has utterly changed our TV viewing habits -- has changed my listening habits completely. From having to bring in a stack of CDs to free ranging playlists of really disparate stuff. Used to be I only did on-demand listening of playlists, but now, I''ve got a custom ""radio station"" set up with a selection of 10 bands that I told it I wanted included and it plays those along with several others. Heard some good stuff.
I''m a complete Rhapsody spokesman anymore, because the model absolutely fits my needs while I''m sitting at my computer at work. If I get a wild hair to hear some random song (a friend recently said ""you''ll never believe what I''m listening to right now... Bloodstone from Judas Priest!"", causing a wave of nostalgia so I searched and started listening to it within about 10 seconds) I can, immediately. And the selection is good on the on-demand list and excellent on the ""radio"" list. Certis could even listen to Creed on the radio lists

Bob Dylan is the man..

They played part of it on Dan Patrick last week. It was pretty funny.

I can honestly say I''ve never been into Dylan. But then I''ve listened to the Oak Ridge Boys, so what the hell do I know.
To save some level of acceptance, I must relate that I was about 9 at the time. You''re right, that doesn''t help a bit.

When I was in college I picked up a three-pack of Dylan''s earliest folk albums and it took about 72 hours and a 2.5 gallon jug of Carlo Rossi burgandy for me to become a lifelong fan.

You have to aquire a taste for Dylan - but once you do, you''ll want to hear it all and often..
Thornley has had my ear lately. They are Canadian, so I don''t know if will be on your service or not, but to me, it is well-written, catcy, well-played rock. The lead singer Ian Thornley used to be in charge of Big Wreck (give them a listen as well, probably some of the more oringinal Rock music I have heard), probably my favourite band. I agree on Green Day, American Idiot is fantastic, and gets better with every listen.
Winter: Rhapsody has both Thornley and Big Wreck. I''ll check them out. Thanks!

I picked up American Idiot a couple of weeks ago. I still think Warning is better, but I haven''t listened to it enough yet for it to grow on me.
Best CD I''ve bought in the last few months is the newest Third Eye Blind. I''ve always been a fan and it doesn''t disappoint.
This is why I love Rhapsody. You mention the new Third Eye Blind album, and within 10 seconds I''m listening to that very album. Never heard it before...so far not bad:)

Too many choices
Of course, I have had some difficulty finding some of the more obscure alternative stuff I listened to in the 80''s. But they''ve got plenty of other stuff, so I suppose I''ll live.

I love ""The Postal Service""...out of Vancouver, I believe....

My wife is like that for me. Because of her, I found a lot of music I didn''t know I liked.
Rammstein, old Metallica, Bob Dylan, PearlSoundNirFooJamGardenVanaFighters(it''s all one big group), etc.
And as always, when in doubt, listen to Zeppelin.

They''re fun. The lead singer is the head of Death Cab For Cutie, of whom I''m also quite fond.

I bought Brian Wilson''s SMiLE off of iTunes. What an incredible album. The harmonies are so tight and the journey he takes with the melodies is amazing. The version of Good Vibrations at the end is worth the price of the CD (IMHO). Good for him for finally getting it all created.

For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. ~Ron Shelton, Bull Durham, 1988
I have to recomend The Mars Volta, The Dismemberment Plan, and second The Postal Service. They are all a bit off the beaten path and all imo fantastic.
I''m really digging the new Interpol. I not sure what it is about their sound but I love it. Both releases are totally solid, IMO.
Just today I picked up The Killers and the new Megadeth. Haven''t had a chance to check out the Megadeth yet but I think The Killers is gonna get some time in cd player.
"Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin
""Has Been"" is an outstanding album. A self-aware mixture of thoughtful and emotional pieces (such as ""Why Did You Do It"" about his wife''s suicide) and hilarious comedic pieces (""Ideal Woman""). I was originally going to dismiss the album as self-referential tripe but after hearing two tracks on CBC I was curious and picked it up. I''m glad I did, although the track with Henry Rollins is weak, as is the closing track with Brad Paisley.
With Ben Folds at the helm, in conjunction with performances contributed by Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann and Lemon Jelly this is a pretty cool album.

Oh and I hope the rumours are true that iTunes will be launching in Canada in November. That''ll be sweet if its true, I''ve been waiting not-so-patiently since the ITMS launch in the U.S.

I''ve been digging old and new AFI, getting back into Perfect Circle and Tool, and enjoying Franz Ferdinand thanks to my girlfriend''s obsession with that type of music.
She is also a former punker, so there''s a whole backlog of stuff I''m either finding I really enjoy or hate. Misfits are awesome, can''t beat good ol'' Danzig. Rollins band is pretty good too.
Every now and then I also delve into the rap side of things, I enjoy the new Snoop and Pharrell tune ""Drop it Like it''s Hot"".
But seriously? I''m a Guns N Rose''r for life. Appetite = best album ever.
