This is the deal. My current (unused) joystick is a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro. I'm looking for a good joystick (and possible joystick throttle combo) and I don't know what's out there, what's good anymore, and where I can buy it from. I've done some laxidaisical google searching but to no avail!

Help me GWJ! Or how else will I get shot down in style during Pacific Fighters?

But that one up a post is a bit more pretty!

Wow. So I did some searching at Amazon and check out this review I found of the Cougar HOTAS.

"Crazy Flightsim Nut wrote:

While it is true that many have bad pots and switches either from the day they were recieved or after 100s and 1000s of hours of use, the vast majority do not experience this kind of mechanical failure. TM will send you the parts for free if you write/email/call them. Yes, it did take about 4 months for me to get backup parts (I didnt need them yet). And yes, there are HALL Effect (electro-magnetic parts) to replace the moving pots (potentiometers) which make the controllers even more long lasting. This would be for those with the money and is very worth the investment if youre logging 100s of hours in your favorite flight sim.

Complexity:
Cougars are not for the techically challenged or timid flight simmer. You will have to know how to program in the TM button command file language (or just slightly modify the existing ones to meet your needs), know how to hook up your flight controllers to work with the Cougars, understand Windows controller utility, use the TM Command and Control setup software, use the FOXY stick file editor and Cougar maintenance software (which is super), understand flight controls as they relate to the aircraft you are simulating an how that maps to the stick buttons and axes, understand the complex flight sim (for hard core simmers that would be: Falcon4, LockOn, MS-FS, IL2 and others).

Uh... I just want to use the joystick. Not rewire my house. And not wait a third of the year for replacement parts if I get a lemon. A lemon that costs $260.

Other than the gold crap on the shaft (cue the S&M jokes again), this is the Cyborg 3D I use and it works great. If the base were a little heavier, it''d be perfect.

I had one of the Cougar HOTAS setups. It''s a damned nice setup. I sold it when I wasn''t playing any flight games only because it was too expensive to sit there gathering dust and I wanted a new camera lens. The early units had some production problems but that''s not a problem anymore. Warranty replacement parts are fast, it''s when you buy parts through their relatively new shopping service that it takes time. It is a niche controller though, but one with a crazy community of skilled modders. I had the gimbals replaced in mine with some custom-machined completely redesigned gimbals that did away with the horizontal/vertical notchiness. Very cool stuff but bad for the OCD types like me...

I own an EVO. Works great for me and I like how you can adjust it to fit your hand.

I love the original Precision Pro. I have one sitting here collecting dust as we speak and I am eager to try out Pacific Fighters with it. Why would you want to go with something else? The original versions of the Pro were great and I always hear about people to trying find them because the newer versions Microsoft puts out suck big time!

The only issue I have with mine is that the action on the stick feels a bit loose always has been. I wish the spring was a bit stiffer.

This isn''t the original unfortunately. It''s one of the newer Precision Pro''s. It''s still pretty good but it''s not my beloved original... my original that was so tragically taken from me!

Same here, except something snapped in the base of mine and it hasn''t worked quite as well after, even after recallibrating.

It doesn''t take long to adjust it, either, so my kids also use it without any troubles. Also, it''s just as easy to set up as a left-handed stick.

Notch another Cyborg. There''s a FF version also. Cyborg is much tougher than it looks (and it looks great), easy to setup and very, very precise.

I use the original Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro. I wouldn''t trade it for any other stick. Well I also use my Steel Battalion stick but that is a work in progress.

I have the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, which is basically the wired version of the joystick PaintHappens referenced. My version has a sturdy quad base rather than the space saving tripod base on the wireless. I only use it for crashing planes and helis in BF 1942 and BF:V and it has served its purpose well. Dramatic Marlin has a very nice Microsoft stick. I''m not sure if that''s the same as the one you have or not.

Oh crap I can see the OOCT now.

The tripod base on my stick has served me well for killing robots in medch warrior 4 plus Mech warrior 4 Mercs. I really haven''t have any problems with lack of stability in it.... I was going to buy the wired version btu Staples ran a sale on it for 29.99 and I happened to have a $30 off $150 coupon... It pays to buy the Ink Cartridges a company sometimes!!

I have an older version of the saitek x45 its a bit on the expensive side but it is a really good stick/throttle combo.

I was actually looking at the X45 model that our Best Buy had, Frog. I''m seriously considering it now. I liked the feel and weight.

I have the most current X45 - I may have called it the X36 which I also have somewhere - it is nice, but it seriously hogs up deskspace - that being said its a great Mechwarrior tool - lots of feel and control and rudder petals are simulated on the throttle - 4 spy stars as a controller.

Can you clarify what you mean by, ''...can adjust it to fit your hand...''? I have small hand''s and I''ve alway''s had some problem''s reaching all the button''s comfortably on several sticks. I had the original Thrustmaster and loved it, but after several year''s finally let it go because of this reason. Same with a couple others. I''ve ended up with the original Precision Pro and it''s lean and mean, but still a bit of the same problem.

Robear: If you read this, that pic of the Cyborg 3D make''s it look like it would be great for someone with smaller hands. True?

Cool. Thanks for the input Spy. I may have to take a close look at this with Pacific Fighter''s coming. Man it''s been a long time since really getting into a flight sim. I hope it doesn''t bust my brain to learn tho''

If you have a Best Buy - go buy it there and if you dont like it - return it - no harm - no foul - I have done that with a couple of peripherals and they have a pretty painless return policy...
