State of the Site *long*

Elysium's picture

As many of you are probably aware, this is normally a topic I'd plaster across the front page, but we've already got plenty going on up there, and it's not always a terribly interesting read when I get busy chatting up my own site. I figure in this format you're responsible for having clicked the subject so any boredom on your part is your own responsibility. That said, I do have some thoughts on the community and the site as a whole as we come into our donation time, and you might find them interesting.

First, thanks to everyone who has and continues to donate. I'm not just speaking of those flinging money our way, but also those who have donated extremely generous giveaway prizes, those who donate their words to our front page, those who donate their skills to improving the site, those who donate their thoughts to our forums, and those who donate their time to reading. You guys make what was meant to be a self indulgent web experiment worth far more than Certis or I could have hoped. In short, you guys are awesome.

On the topic of giveaways and those who donated prizes, should we give a few weeks heads up before donation drives (though, there won't be another for quite some time) so those who'd like to contribute prizes can get organized? This feels to me like asking for icing on top of the icing on my cake, but if this is how you'd like to contribute far be it from me to stand in your way.

I also appreciate all of your patience and support as GWJ has gone through some recent growing pains. Actually, I have several things to say about that, because as we've pushed through a few difficult weeks to what finally feels like the other side, I want to talk a bit about where we've been.

I've always felt like opening up the door a little bit and showing what's going on behind the scenes can only make you guys feel more connected to the site. And, truth be told, it's been a bit tumultuous of late. Not in a genuinely bad way, no politics or back biting, but just adjustment to a series of events.

As I'm sure you're all aware we've recently changed hosts. I want to take my own opportunity here to thank Tactical Gamers for giving us our new home. Having the opportunity to join an already solid community and bring the full functionality of GWJ back online has been an extremely gratifying experience, and really was a bit of a weight off our chests. While our previous host was an excellent place for us to launch and build, we were really not a good fit with the kind of site I think they necessarily wanted. Truth is, we're more of a burden than we're worth a lot of the time. I recognize this.

A lot of our functionality takes up a larger portion of maintenance than our traffic really justifies. We eat bandwidth, processing time, and other technical sounding words that don't mean much to me, but apparently turns into issues of time and money. But, to be painfully honest, things should have never reached a level where our readers noticed, and it has always bothered me that without warning I'd suddenly find the site down, or slow. Certis would say something designed to be fair and not point blame. He would also probably not want me to pen my precise thoughts on the matter of who was at fault where.

I know Certis is flawlessly professional in his dealings with the people we align ourselves with - and he really is the face of GWJ in many ways - so to balance that I'm like the straight talking drunk uncle who always storms in and embarrasses him with fart jokes and the story about the time I lost a finger in a hay bailing accident. So, while he paints a pretty picture, allow me to say that he is being quite political and many of the technical issues the site has experienced over the past few months could have easily been avoided with just a bit more communication and clarity. I don't wish to speak ill of our former home, but I will say that our goals were not well matched to the kind of site they were looking for, and they were not always clear or consistent in their dealings with us. Further we were encouraged not to grow further until the release of GWJ 2.0 - which really will streamline our site and is something we continue to pursue- , which put us in the uncomfortable position of not promoting ourselves (though, we continued to grow despite ourselves), and we were forced into a kind of artificial plateau. It was a stagnating atmosphere. In short, I for one am glad we've moved, and I have every reason to believe that many of our technical issues will quite suddenly disappear.

Of course, I expect that having said that we will experience mysterious technical issues very soon, because fate really thinks that's a funny kind of joke to play on me.

But, I don't think the only issue we've had has been technical or to be put on someone else's shoulders. I think we've all been very tactical in not giving voice to concerns many of you may and probably did have of late for fear that saying a thing will make that thing come true. With Sway's heartbreaking departure from the front page - though, thankfully he hasn't disappeared from the forums, and we still bug him in private just because old habits are hard to break - my notable and lengthy absence, and Pyro's poorly timed affliction (dammit, Pyro!) all coupled with the aforementioned technical issues, the site probably looked as if it had hit a frightening stumbling block. I'm sure we're all familiar with sites where a hiccup of this kind began a long agonizing process by which the site slowly faded and died. If you feared that GWJ might not survive its confluence of issues, you were well within your rights to do so. The evidence suggests it was a real possibility.

Let me set your fears aside. GWJ has weathered a few difficulties, but I feel as confident in the site as ever. Pyro's back up and in action, the site functionality is up and running again, GWJ 2.0 is still on the horizon, we've got a great new host, our community is as strong as ever, and the front page is beginning to feel full again.

This next part doesn't happen often so you guys might want to take note. The only reason this site is strong, vibrant, and able to weather difficulties is because Certis is incredibly dedicated and committed to making this effort work. He has been the glue of this site for the past two months, and any praise you have to GWJ needs to be directed toward him.

I, on the other hand, am a big flake. As I returned to work, readjusted my life, decided where my priorities were, and retreated into a nice tidy introverted lifestyle, I seemed to disappear at the worst possible time. I didn't mean to give the impression that I was beginning to pull away from GWJ, though I fear I might have seemed to be doing just that. Partly, I was disillusioned by the path we seemed to be stuck on for a short time. I like growth, and numbers that go up, and strutting around a lot. I wasn't playing a lot of games, and was even less inspired to spend a lot of time writing about what I wasn't playing. To make a long post short (Too Late!) I was being a jackass. Certis pointed this fact out to me, and I realized how much it must have seemed that I was on the way out. I don't know if this will be a relief or annoyance, but I'm not going anywhere.

And with that, I'm done being a jackass in quite that manner, though I've no doubt that I'll find entirely new models of jackassedhood.

So, there were some things that could've gone better, let's not dwell. Why do I bring it up? Because, even if you didn't notice, or figured it would all work itself out, I don't want you to think we're flying blind. We know how it looks when you try to access the site and can't, or it's painfully slow, or we mysteriously pull down Gamecal, or one of the founding members goes MIA. I stand by my previous assertion that a lot of sites wouldn't survive a confluence of bad luck and hurdles, much less come out of it stronger. I think we're going to buck the trend here. I think we're poised now to make a site that will knock people sideways. In other words, it's time to get off this plateau. It's time to grow!

So, ultimately what I want to say here is thanks for sticking with us and being patient through our growing pains. I think we're going to be worth the perseverence. I think the coming months will be our best yet. I think things are about to get really really good.

As a recent newcomer to the site, and joining the community proper with my first venture into teamspeak and JO (please be gentle) this evening, I truly appreciate the work that Elysium, Certis, and Pyro have spearheaded. I work in boring place, and this place helps me maintain sanity with good discussions, funny pieces of mindless drivel, and more importantly articles that describe things that go on during the average everday life of a gamer. Not just the ""have you seen the latest about X"", or ""I beat X and this is how."" This is a site about real life...real things happen.

Pyro went to the sickbay for a prolonged period. This is life. Elysium has had work and family committments. This is life. Certis is canadian. This is life. One of the main reasons I stay at this site and continue to enjoy the banter, is that I know I am dealing with actual people. As I am going through a major life change myself (a 7-month old at home), it is honestly comforting to see that life does go on, and there is time for gaming in there.

As a grateful member of the community, thanks to the people that put this site together. You guys continue to do great work, and your effortys are truly appreciated. And thanks also to the community itself....we make this happen, and we keep it cool to deal with each other. In other words, thanks all. I really enjoy this site, and hope it continues ad infinitum. I will be contributing happily to the donation drive, and would also volunteer whatever services I have for the better of the site. I ain''t got much, but its yours if you want it.

Actually I really appreciate this post. I didn''t really think GWJ was going to go away, but I had worried recently that GWJ 2.0 might be a sly reference to a bunch of folks ''retiring'' and looking for a new crew. I''m very glad that you''re still around, Elysium, and I hope you find a healthy balance between the recent life changes and gaming/the site. I''m also in the midst of some rather challenging life changes, very similar to what you''re doing, and GWJ is one of my few refuges after I get the kids to bed. So, basically this is a very convoluted way of saying, thanks and welcome back!

Hey, I wouldn''t be too hard on yourself, Elysium. I myself haven''t been as active a community member as I used to be (or as I''d like to be) due to a host of problems in my life this year starting in particular around February and March.

Many times I''ll pop in after a few days'' absence and just be too overwhelmed by everything that''s happened in the meantime. I see all these new faces constantly who I barely know due to how little interaction I''ve had, and suddenly I feel like a stranger even among the old-timers like me. I rarely get to make GWJ gaming nights due to a confluence of less spending money to by the latest popular multiplayer games (I''m glaring in your direction JO) and a lack of time to be online with the crew anyway.

GWJ is an awesome community, and I''m glad to be a member of it. It''s the first site I ever cared enough about to donate to, and I love explaining what it is to interested people who ask about the polo shirt I wear (I still love the design on that thing!).

So I guess I can understand how circumstance could so readily draw you into seclusion, Ely, and it''s not easy to be gregarious and accessible when you feel like doing nothing other than just getting quiet time to yourself.

Anyway... I guess the point is, this is still the best online community of which I''ve ever been a part, and it''s due in no small way to the efforts of you, and Certis, and Pyro, and the others who contribute so much time and effort behind the scenes.

Thanks, guys!

This reminds me. I feel culpable for some of these bandwidth issues. I had a tech come by my office about a month ago on some day where I think I''d cruised the forums for about two hours that afternoon. He says, ""Hey, is your computer working alright?""
""Yeah,"" I says.
""No slowdowns or slow network activity?""
""No more than normal, why?""
He goes, ""Because I''ve been tracking network activity this afternoon, and your computer has been hammering this site called boehosting.com.""
I was like, ""Oh, really?""
I wound up telling him I''d check the compy for spyware and had to tell myself to ratchet back my board activity. Hopefully, I''ve succeeded.

I don''t post as often as I''d like because I don''t come across in type as eloquently as I believe I do in person but I can''t thank everyone who''s part of the development of this site enough.

It''s wonderful to have a place to come to where everyone has a job, is ""mostly"" mature and yet still likes gaming. I enjoy all the folks that post and this is in my top 3 of the sites that I visit several times daily.

Thank you, thank you to Certis, Elysium, Pyro (my nickname in highschool by the way) and anyone else that is involved in making this place the way it is.

Any difficulties in the site was transparent to me. I have always appreciated the great writing, the fantabulous atmosphere, and the camaraderie... Of course, I am fairly oblivious to a lot of things so maybe I just missed it. And oh by the way Elysium - I havent forgotten about the article - I just havent finished it (stupid work, earn money, take the King''s money, do the King''s bidding stuff....) I never felt the site was in trouble. Life happens and this community is so awesome it''d take a lot to break it up. You guys have created something truly awesome that I enjoy visiting daily (sometimes hourly ). Without this site and its community I doubt I would enjoy video games half as much as I do. I have plenty of friends, but not gaming friends, so it''s great to be able to share and enjoy them with like minded people.

There''s no doubt the site is only growing. Each month there''s new faces and with the donation drive there''s a lot of new faces. Be proud of what you guys have created!

I will echo the comments of support and appreciation with my own. GWJ is, for the most part, my online home now. I hadn''t planned on spending so much time on it or having it play such a pivotal role in my life outside of family and work, but it has. I don''t post all that much, and when I do its usually of questionable value, but I do thoroughly enjoy most of the contributions to the site and the entertaining banter in the forums. This still holds true even if I can''t read it all anymore given the proliferation of new postings every time I refresh the site.

Years of corporate life have slowly diminished my creative drive, strong in years past when I wrote full-time and was a bum of an artist. Now I''m a ""type a"" work-a-holic that deals predominantly with politics, stressful projects and long days. This is the one place that gives me some of that creative spark back, as weak as it may be, and provides some respite from ""all that other stuff"". I enjoy the company of many of this community and have come to look forward to game night gatherings the same way that I may have looked to a kegger or club party when I was younger. (In and of itself, that could be a sad statement if not for the quality of the community here)

I have to admit the growth of the site, while overall good, took away some of GWJ''s appeal to me. I liked the smaller, more ""intimate"" environment of the past and found myself getting irritated by some of the postings (others may have been irritated by me I suppose). Overall in my head GWJ was getting to be too busy, too noisy and not fitting well with where my head was of late (I''ve been called a cranky old man before, and this is probably a good indication of why). Perhaps tracing back to my work personality, patience was scarce and I stopped joining most game night events and I contemplated stepping back and visiting with less frequency or taking a hiatus from GWJ altogether.

The funny thing is, I couldn''t do it. Even on days I swore I wouldn''t hit the bookmark or hit the refresh button I succumbed like an addict looking for his next hit. I continued to go back to that familiar URL with Stan''s smiling visage, even if the end result may be further irritation that would leave me with a grimace. What became clear was that I enjoyed the content and many of the contributors of this little community too much to let a lack of patience on my part prevent me from enjoying the good things here. Now with my head in a (hopefully) ""better place"", I''m back to enjoying the site again and joining back into GWJ game night events. The hard work that the ""staff"" have invested to cultivate a relatively sane and stable corner on the net is admirable (perhaps not head-swelling admirable, but admirable all the same).

Many thanks to Elysium, Certis, Pyro, Sway, ColdForged, 1Dgaf and all of the regular contributors for the fine work. This is the only community site I have been ""active"" on, and the only one where I hold a great many people in high esteem.

I''d also like to throw my hat in the ring here and say that I really enjoy the site. I don''t get a chance to play very often these days (Six-month-old) and teamspeak is pretty much out of the question at the moment.

As I''m sure you all know, the number of jackasses in the online gaming community is staggering. It''s nice to know there''s refuge here. I occasionally still find myself over at forumplanet....the people who post there are barely literate, and really only interesting in a train wreck kind of way.

In short, keep up the great work.
