Looks like it'll be Silver for me. I'm looking forward to trying out DoD and CS: Source.

Bronze is looking pretty damned good to me, but I''ll wait for the peanut gallery to weigh in on Steam before I take the plunge.
And a trip to Valve as the gold prize? That''s like a 10 minute drive, unless they moved their office recently... I guess they could reimburse me for gas.
I never minded piracy. Anyone who minds about piracy is full of sh*t. Anyone who pirates your game wasn't going to buy it anyway! -Warren Spector
Hmmm, I thought all along that I''d pre-order through Steam to get HL2 quicker. But now with the announcement that Europe will get the game 3 days after it is released in the USA, coupled with the fact that the UK release is looking like DVD only, I''m reconsidering my position.
CS:S isn''t enough of a carrot for me to bite and pre-order now (UT2k4''s Onslaught is still my multiplayer crack). Guess I''ll see where I''m going closer to HL2''s release.

Damn. Gold is a lot of cash and can''t most of the mods be downloaded for free?? Also, their timing is horrible. UT2k4, Tribes, Rome, Dawn of War, Doom 3 and now Half Life?!?
Too bad they couldn''t pony this up in July. They''d have had a little more exclusive market for it.
As for me, I''ll wait for the reviews to weigh in on this. Funds are low and I''d rather have Tribes (one the DS and the patch are released).

Hrms, anyone know when DoD: Source will be released? I''m with you CEJ, I just got T:V, so I''m not in any big hurry for a new game. I''ve actually never played CS, so that''ll be interesting, but I''m more interested in trying DoD:Source.
I''m going for the bronze. woo hoo, third place! I can''t wait to give CS:Source a go.

I want a Bronze package that includes DoD:S instead of CS:S. I don''t want to pay an extra $10 for not liking CS and its powerless weapons.

This is all a ploy. People expected ""someting cheaper thant usual retail $49"" for a Steam download of HL2, maybe $40 or even $35. Instead they''re shafted as usual, but because there''re even higher priced ""silver"" and ""gold"" options, the $49 everyone pays for a retail box all of the sudden seems reasonable... for an electronic version!!!

My only personal issue with downloading HL2 through Steam is you can''t trade it in for a new game at a store or swap with a buddy. But then, all thing considered I''m not sure you could with a boxed copy either.

I think I may just pass altogether, I am still undecided.

That has more to do with making retailers happy than anything else.
I won''t buy it on Steam due to the fact that I want the box, the cd, and everything else. If I''m going ot spend $50 for a game, I want something I can hold in my hands. If it was $35, I''d be willing to give up the physical product.

I have it pre-ordered through my local EB. I could care less about Counterstrike as I suck at it. I''ll prolly pony up for the gold as I like the idea of seeing the original HL with HL2 graphics...
Yankees rock, you know it's true...
Yeah, I used to be of the ""Valve and VU suck for creating this whole mess"" vein and had assured myself I would buy nothing but a boxed version. But, with the announcement that CS: Source, and all of Valve''s back log available immediately, I was quickly singing a different tune.
I guess what it boils down to, for me, is that I''m not sure (I don''t even think Valve is sure) when HL2 is released. So, I can either wait for my boxed copy, have it get into November, oh wait, END of November, oh wait, beginning of December (which could very well happen) and have nothing to show for it. Or, I could start playing what I already know is a fun game (from even just the one map they already have out).
Also, I don''t currently own a copy of Half-Life. I mean, I OWN like two, but I have no idea where they are. So, now I can play not only CS and CS:Source, but also re-play through Half-Life and all of the expansions (which I will probably do) and also DoD, which a couple of my friends still play. All in all, even at $60, I feel the price for the Silver Edition is quite justified.
XBox Live Gamertag: Warlockbert
Man, at $60, I don''t think I can swing it. Not for a couple of weeks, and certainly not without forgoing some other purchases. I was hoping they come in under the $50 mark, but no such luck.
Now, I''m really considering abstaining althogether, as much as I wanted the games. If I buy the disks in store, that''s only the ""bronze"" edition, so I''d be out $50, plus have to shell out additional cash for DoD, CS, and the other games. Not cool.
I think I can only justify the purchase if I was playing HL alot now, and it was going to be my primary game over the next year or so. But I can''t say that. I have HL platinum on my HD, and I never even play it, while I play Joint Ops almost every day. I play UT more than Counterstrike (which isn''t saying much).
Looks like the more I think about it, the more I can''t justify it.

I was a shoe in for the Silver package until they announced pricing. For whatever intangible reason the pricing has hit my ""eek"" point and now I''ve reconsidered and will most likely get the Bronze option. In all honesty, the pricing almost had me completely skipping the Steam version altogether, even with the immediate availability of CS:Source. However, upon further consideration I''m simply going to make do without the Silver extras -- I already have Half-Life and I''m making progress toward finishing it and I don''t see going through it again so soon just for the different engine, and I don''t really care about the rest of the backlog -- and spring for Bronze to have the CS:Source to diddle with for a few months.
It''s interesting, $5 to $10 dollars less and I would probably have swung the other way. It''s intangible, but real in my head. Hard to explain.
"THE HELL ASS BALLS." - Prederick, expressing frustration in the time-honored way.
The bronze edition gets you CS.. you wouldnt have to shell out additional cash.
Not sure why anyone would be still playing HL a lot anymore?? its many years old.. I''d play it through again simply because it was a great game.. but I''d rather wait for the Source remake.. I dont quite follow your logic here.

Keep in mind that HL2 is most likely to be 60$ in the box at the store too so you''re still going to pay the silver price to get the silver package.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Hmm, don''t know why, since you are always the logical one.
I don''t see age of the game as an issue, really, and apparently , alot of other people fell the same way. Still alot of full CS and DoD servers last I checked.
What I''m getting at is upgrading my current HL setup to the new version will set me back $60, which is my ""ouch"" point. $50 is a bit steep as well.
My gaming backlog is pretty deep, so I have to ask myself, with each purchase, am I going to play this game right away, is it going to be my ""primary"" game, or is it going into the pile with the rest?
If it''s just going to go into the pile with the rest of the games, then it better be cheap.
Based on my prior HL experience, I''d say this is a pass. HL remains unfinshed, Blue Shift and Opposing force are installed, but never played, and other than a few CS sorties recently, HL Platinum is just taking up harddrive space.

Am I the only one willing to spend 90 bucks on some posters and a cap and a cd of music I''ll probably listen to once or twice along with a postcard which will gather dust and then get covered with a pile of junkmail oh and don''t forget the collectors box! Which will have a neat HL2 logo on it right next to the UPS sticker!
I don''t mind paying 90 bucks for a game I''ve enjoyed for years... also, my CD key was registered with steam by some guy in college because I let him install my HL so we could play CS. I''m still mad at him for that... especially since he then bought his own copy but steam STILL wouldn''t release my CD-key... *shrug* Water under the bridge....
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
I''ll be the fanboi nerd and say that I''m excited. $60 does not seem unreasonable for all the games I''ll be getting. I can understand how if you had HL already (as opposed to those, like me, who only have Condition Zero right now) you might be skeptical, but you''re still getting CS:Source, DoD:Source, and Half-Life:Source, all for around $5 more than what you''ll be paying in the store for the boxed version of only HL2 and CS:Source.
Now, if only there was a way for me to go to steampowered, buy the game during work, and have it start installing on my computer at home... c''mon Big Brother, where are you at when we need you?
XBox Live Gamertag: Warlockbert
They really lost me on this one. I was going for silver, myself, but why would I essentially pay retail box prices for just a download to my harddrive? Bypassing the physical supply chain has *got* to count for something. And since I just picked up T:V, I''m not really all that jazzed about getting CS right now.

I''m pretty sure that legally Valve could not sell HL2 for less than what the box version will cost.
You''ll have to wait for their next title for that I''d bet...

That''s pretty sweet, actually.
So assuming I would have already had this installed on both computers, I could have connected to my home computer, ordered HL2, and had CS:Source ready to play when I got home.
<shudders at the implications>
XBox Live Gamertag: Warlockbert
I''m undecided but will likely make a decision by the time I get home. Odds are I''ll pick this up through Steam, if only for the convenience, but only the Bronze package. I''m not sold though as if CS: S is the big draw, I have found my skill level with FPSs plummeting to the point that I''m just ineffectual and frustrated throughout the game, leaving me to quit in disgust. Not sure if I want to get right back on that horse so quickly.
As for remote controling from work to home, unfortunately (for me) we upgraded our firewall at my workplace early this year and it broke my ability go go through VNC or RDP to remote control my machines at home. Even through alternate ports. Putting in place any kind of tunnelling to get around it would not be a good thing to do here, so I''ll have to wait until I get home.

I think I was confused here. For some reason I was thinking you were going to download HL2 but buy it in the store, which you could do, just put your HL2 key into Steam when you get the box home. If you mean start from scratch, then yes realvnc or another remote PC application is in order.
In my best Ed McMahon voice, ""You are correct sir!"" You''ll get CS:S in return for purchasing early but you''ll get HL2 unlocked when the game ships. With VUG and Valve fighting over their contract that could be up to 6 months away.
I see what you''re saying but CD media gets scratched, lost or generally F''d up every-so-often. 60$ is still worth the price of admission considering the lifespan of the first game (is that a good thing or bad thing I guess is the debate there) in my opinion plus I only have to worry about keeping track of my login/password and not media fubars. Another plus is no CD check protection!
