My HD signal is delayed....

Is this normal that my HD signal is delayed by a second or 2 compared to normal broadcasts?

A lot of time when I get crappy announcers for a Skins game I will turn on the radio as they are better but they where a few seconds ahead of the play so had to stop doing that.

So again is this normal for HD?

Hmm, you might have better luck posting this on avsforum.com. I think there''s specific threads based on location/provider etc.. maybe some others are experiencing the same problem.

I don''t think that can be solved, it happens with any system that does a lot of signal processing. If I turn on a regular digital cable box, the HD cable box, and the DVR box all at the same time (I have all three kinds on various TVs), none of them are synchronized.

I have an analog signal and a digital signal from cablevision. The digital signal is ahead of the analog by about a second or less. I wouldn''t worry about it unless your getting signal problems.. Of course I know stuff about three seconds before you do

Oh not worried about it just annoyed that if I listen to the play calling on the radio I hear the play before I see it.

Oh and thanks for the information glad to see I am not alone.

Are you getting your TV via satellite? The round trip time, at the speed of light, to a satellite in geosynchronous orbit (22,236 miles) is about one or two seconds. Even if you not getting your signal directly from a satellite it could still be taking a few trips out there and back on its way to you.

Um, lightspeed is 186,000 miles/second.

22,236 miles is about 12% of a light-second. 120msec, give or take, so 240 round trip, and about 300msec for in-satellite computation. 0.5s delay, roughly.

Most of your problem stems from having to decode the signal, and in order to do that, it''s got to buffer in the frames until it can generate a full signal, or it''s waiting for a primary frame (the full frame, from which all subsequent frames are diffs of).

1)It was just a quick estimate
2) The 1 second value has been quoted to me by people who know alot more about satellites then I do, they might have been including on the ground processing delays though.
3) Its possible that a signal has to make multiple trips out to space and back on its way to you. ( venue to station, station to provider, provider to you, seems like a reasonable worst case)
4) I could be wrong and I know nothing about HDTV signals.
5) He could not be using satellite at all.
6) The TV station could be(and most likely is) running on a few second delay in-case any streakers, or other unsavory things pop-up. They wouldn''t need to do this for radio.

Note a quick google search turned up this,
satellite signal propagation time: 239.6 ms to 279.0 ms
so your half a second estimate seems spot on for a single satellite hop.

I have the same problem, but on Tivo when watching live TV. Supposedly when watching ""live"" it is real-time, but if I turn on the same channel in another room, I can hear the Tivo is a second or two behind.

TiVos and other PVRs buffer a second or so, thats what causes the delay.

This is not an HD problem. Radio and television are almost never in sync - mostly due to using different delay settings. For example, in your case it sounds like the radio may be on a 5-second delay and the TV on a 7-second delay.

I''ve (never had HD but) experienced this many times (almost every Saturday) when I lived in Birmingham and would watch the Alabama game on the TV with Eli Gold on the radio.

Edit: Now if the radio in your area is in sync with normal (vs. HD) TV broadcasts, ignore my comment... though I''d still guess it was a buffering problem.

Yeah radio is in sync with normal broadcasts.

I get both my normal and HD broadcast via cable too.

Oh well no biggie and by how bad the Redskins are doing maybe I should just gouge out my eyes to avoid watching the games.

Hey! Merrill Hoge said they''d win the division and the Eagles would miss the playoffs.

So take heart in that...

And hey...he gets paid for that!

Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

Great I now have hope!

They are going 12-0 for the rest of the season now.

Oh, you''re a Red Skin fan? In that case you might want to yank the cord from your cable/sat box and turn on Madden and start the season all over. Maybe you can pull it off.
