Coincidently, my company just used SurveyMonkey for a survery we sent out to our customers. The results we got back contained the IP address for each responder...

Filled it out, you never know.

Actually I''ve been entering lots of compos lately, not all of them thankfully call me to risk my future career in a questionaire.

The only way I could see this as something profit-like is that in a LOT of areas of the world that aren''t, say, the US and Britain, Piracy of all sorts is not only rampant, but not that huge of a deal. Go to your local Macedonian Video Rental store, and what can you choose from? The Matrix Revolutions on DVD? But that just got released 3 weeks ago in the US in the theaters! Visit an Iraqi Music store (there was even a special on MTV about this very thing, hosted by Gideon Yago, IIRC) and you''ll find a pretty well produced, but obviously pirated, copy of most all the music we have in the states.

And I suppose, yes, a terrorist could be making money off of this. But it seems less likely that it''s government officials saying ""Terrorism is bad, let''s get to piracy first and cut off their money supply"" and more likely that it''s gaming/recording/film companies saying ""Piracy is bad (for us), let''s link it to Terrorism so people will stop doing it.

Yep, that sounds more likely to me. I''m sure piracy of various software/music/dvds/whatever does account for some income for terrorists, but really, they have a host of ways to get money, software piracy is likely little more than a very small part of it.
