Favorite Videogame Song?
Thursday, September 23rd, 2004 - 11:40am
You know you have one. What is it? I'm guessing most are probably tied to those "gaming moments" we all speak of. Mine is no exception. My favorite song is from the Mario 64 level Dire Dire Docks. The intro always reminds me of jumping in the water and seeing the entire world beneath the surface for the first time. It was also just a beautiful song to listen to while swimming around. The level/song combo was just perfect. Your turn.
Oh, and you can listen to the Dire Dire Docks song at:

Pac-man. All the way, man.
And Super Mario Bros.
Ooh! And Galaga was good too!
But Pac-man gets the gold for me.

I don''t know if the song has a name or is a separate track, but there was a bit from Tie Fighter that always gets my blood going, even after all these years.
Edit: Heck, I just found these sites with Tie Fighter midi music

Very cool stuff.
The first thing that came to mind was the Final Fantasy II (or 4, whatever) theme.
Psychotic Foreign Teenage Chicks are so hot. - Legion
I find it ironic anytime a healthy vaccinated person bitches about science...on the internet. - MaverickDago
The song from Super Mario Bros is always a favorite. Does Airwolf theme song count as it was a crappy game but it did have the song in it?
Oh but all time fav is (I think it goes 6789878767653) stones from Ultima VI played on the piano in Lord british''s castle up stairs! God I loved that song.
WOW: Bounce
Some faves:
The Concept of Love, the intro to JSRF, and Hello Allison from the same game.
The battle music from Homeworld.
And there has been many a time that I''ve caught myself humming something from GTA III.

The music in the tower in the first town of Phantasy Star 2. Perfect ambience for the game, techno-futuristic sounding theme all done on MIDI-equivalent.

Not really a game tune, but Mafia''s Django Reinhardt gets my ''coolest soundtrack'' award.
Otherwise, i''d go for the intro music in Operation Flashpoint. I always cranked the volume and took the time to listen to this very dark air when i loaded the game.
Something about that Legend of Zelda music, man. You know what I mean.
And when it came back in Ocarina, with Link running around the countryside... hoo boy.

Actually, there are 3 songs from games that stand out in my mind.
1) My favorite is one of the songs in ""Lords of Magic"". I do believe it is the ""Human"" class song... it was so good I actually ripped it from the game and I have it somewhere in my mp3 archives.
2) Decent 2''s soundtrack from ""Type O Negative"". That entire soundtrack ROCKED... what a great game too!
3) Lastly, one that I liked alot was one of the songs from the original ""Dark Reign"". No idea what song it was but if I heard it again I would definately become giddy.

For all who live in such times, it is not for them to decide. All we get to decide is what to do with the time given to us
When I think about my Gaming early years i always picture myself sitting at a desk playing Neuromancer with all those Divo (I believe) songs playing.

I just remembered two more:
1. The jazzy tune that accompanies you in Pilotwings64 when you''re in Birdman mode. The effect is very similar to swimming around to the Mario tune I mentioned. You just feel so free cruising around. No baddies chasing you. No time limit. Just lovin'' life in a new world.
2. The happy happy tune at the fair in the early scenes of Chrono Trigger. What a happy tune!
I could only find remixes of them, however I''d still highly recommend checking them out. They''re both by geniuses of the videogame remix world.

The ""Truth and Reconciliation Suite"" on the official soundtrack. A great piece.
The intro to Ridge Racer 4 will always hold a special place in my heart, although I don''t entirely understand why.
Also, basically, all of Mega Man 2.

Most of the soundtrack to the original Command & Conquer was love, too.

Okay here''s 3: Halo, The Deus Ex: Invisible War theme and Duke Nukem''s Grabbag or whatever they called it.

Yeah, there was one other gem in that game series too:

Neuromancer was one I was going to mention, that was Devo, not TH. They were a good choice because they understood musical minimalism, and that was definitely required for the sound capabilities of the time.
Then there''s the theme song to ""Back to Baghdad"", a totally over-the-top hard rock piece best played at loud volumes when your spouse was out of the house. It made me laugh every time.
And finally, the old Battlefield games had awesome soundtracks, period ACW music played with period arrangements. Really outstanding, high quality songs.
"Sometimes I go around saying, 'Kommisar Paulson has seized the commanding heights of the economy!'" - Paul Krugman, asked if recent changes to banking are socialistic.
Well, if we''re going for best original scores:
The menu track for Hitman 2, with the full opera and orchestral act going.
System Shock 2 - well, the whole damn soundtrack, I guess
A couple of the pieces from Knights of the Old Republic, managed to capture the SW-vibe without stealing any of the notes.
The load screen tracks from Rainbow Six...nothing better to get you in the mood to kick down some doors and blast your way through some tangos.
Everything off of the Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack.
"Men like sex, thus boobies! Oogaba!" - dejanzie
"If ads put your sanity to the test
come on down to Rat Boy's nest!
light up a stogie, and soon you'll see
how rock can be commercial-free!
'I'd hit it!'" - HP Lovesauce
As Usual, OCRemix Delivers The Goods
The Rogue Spear soundtrack was absolutely golden.
Also, Freespace 2 had a great soundtrack (available at the site!) and, for all of its flaws, Metal Gear had some generally good tunes, as did Medal of Honor.
Also, the intro music to Mutant League Football. Got you ready to crush the Sixty Whiners into paste.

Thought I''d share this link with you guys... http://www.ocremix.org/ There''s some pretty good stuff on that site if you''re looking for something new (or even old). Some of it''s bad techno remixes but there are some gems here and there.
I also have to give some props to the band Game Over at www.nintendometal.com. They have a song called Little Mac''s Confession which is a heavy metal version of the music from Mike Tyson''s Punchout complete with lyrics. They had some more demos available on their site but it looks like they are preparing to release a CD.
And don''t forget about the Minibosses, www.minibosses.com, if you want some instrumental rock outs of some Nintendo classics.
Ack, you beat me by a minute Prederick.

Hands down, MegaMan 2 theme song. Got it stuck in my head after playing through the Megaman Collection. I put this song even before the allmighty Super Mario Brothers theme (which I consider one of the most catchy tunes ever as well).
Add that to my list. Great one indeed.
Xbox Live: MrGreen
PSN: MrGreenPSN
Wii: 4859 2... oh f*ck it.
As a whole soundtrack, I''d have to say that topping my list would be Total Annihilation, Fantasy General, Rocket Jocket, Outcast, and Emperor of the Fading Suns.
I don''t know that I have any favorite songs, per se...if it has to be a SONG, I''d maybe say Late Goodbye from Max Payne 2, or maybe Fear Factory''s Messiah theme.
Not songs, but cool pieces of music: the intro sequence from Jeremy Soule''s Icewind Dale soundtrack; Marty O''Donnell''s Halo menu music; Mike Reagan''s work on Twisted Metal: Black, especially the spooky menu version of Paint it Black; Harry Gregson Williams'' Metal Gear Solid 2 theme; pretty much the whole Grim Fandango soundtrack. And that one dude who did the music for the Matrix game...I can''t remember his name, but that stuff absolutely slays.

Propaganda!
That is, Akuda House Propaganda from Beyond Good and Evil. Although Fun and Mini-games (that insane mexican tune) is pretty darn great too.
But if I had the heart to pick only one from it, it''d have to be something from the Outcast soundtrack. It''s pure excellence.
Honorable mention goes to Legacy by the Gone Jackals, from the Full Throttle soundtrack, since it plays in one of the classiest intros ever.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
Here are my top 3:
1) The Zelda theme, in Wind Waker when they have that little scroll intro and the theme comes in fully orchestrated it''s just awesome. I wish I could find an mp3 of that version.
2) FFVII: I think it''s the reactor music, anyways it''s way cool.
3) Arcanum intro music, I love that string thing they have when your in the menu.
I used to think the FF theme music was awesome but after having to listen to it for 40+ minutes at a time while FFXI updates I have realized that song needs more to it. It''s just that same little arppegiated scale over and over and it gets annoying after a bit.

His name is Erik Lundborg. And yeah, it was an awesome soundtrack.
Outcast is a great soundtrack, one of the early soundtracks to use a real orchestra before it officially became the Next Big Thing in game music.
The soundtrack is available for download at the Oucast site, if anyone''s interested: http://www.outcast-thegame.com/gallery/index.htm
