Trying to get an idea of where people will play on..

I''m not a big fan of PvP combat. After the horrible experiences I''ve had in Lineage and EQ I would rather not deal with a no life punk with tons of game time killing me just because he can, all the while screaming ""you''ve been owned"" in the chat window.
I get enough of that crap playing UT2004.

Not sure WoW is really going for that kind of PvP experience.. it will be more like DAoC than EQ''s PvP.. I have no clue about Lineage as I never played that..
Sounds like there will be measures in game to prevent rampant newbie farming..

I hate saying this but I never played DAoC. What exactly is Alliance vs. Alliance PVP? I was thinking it would be Alliance vs. Horde if anything.

uhh what I meant is; have PvP zones on the PvE servers... perhaps that is what you were alluding to. In which case I am sending you a case of the finest apologies that Canada has to offer.

In DAOC they had three realms, Hibernia, Albion and Midgard. In certain zones, called the Frontier you could have RvR(realm Vs Realm) battles. The rest of the time ot was straight PvE

As a clarification..unless I''m mistaken both the PvP and PvE servers will have the exact same PvE content..
Its just that the PvE servers will not have the ""Battlegrounds"" or whatever Blizzard calls them in the end..

I''m a total PvP newbie -- the impression I get is that DAoC had good PvP and EQ, Lineage had bad PvP. Can anyone explain why they were different? Is it just kill everyone else, all the time?

I was about to say this because it sounds like what Garrad wants is PvE with the Battlegrounds, which is basically the PvP server. It''s not always PvP and in the rare event you actually see an opposing faction in your newbie/midrange area they''re either fighting guards or running to a quest. You don''t have random PKs, no matter what the level. It''s just not beneficial the way the game is structured.

I will play on the server where most of the GWJ folks are playing. I dont necessarily care for PvP and my experience has been in the Beta - a lot of folks move in to the PvP ""contested"" areas where you have to cross to a quest area and you can have a bad day pretty quick - usually around lvl 20 you have to begin to go further and further away and that can get you killed quick. Nothing like the lvl 55 Undead Mage ruining the lvl 19 Hunter''s day 6 times before the other high lvls moved in to implement smack down. So I am more of a PvE guy since I hate having to wonder if some knucklehead is going to get his giggles by one-shotting me for spite. That being said I''ll play where GWJ goes - my grouping experience with this game has been phenomenal. Better question is are we going Horde or Alliance?

PvP for me! C`mon we could be the GOOD guys!! I dont know why that appeals to me but the thrill of playing with other people who could kill you adds a little spice to it.

Every single server will have PVP. The ""Standard"" servers will have consensual PVP between Alliance and Horde. When you attack an NPC of the opposing faction (say a human runs to orc lands and attacks a guard) he will then be flagged as PVP against the horde. Thats how the pvp works in WoW.
The PVP servers are just open warfare, anyone can kill anyone at any time.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

I''ll probably go PvE for a while until the stupidity dies down or I hook up with some other PvP''ers. I''m a solo-type, so PvP doesn''t really draw me, but it can be fun once with a good crew.

I''ll go wherever GWJ goes. My experience with early COH was good, and I''ve just generally meant to jump into more games with the community. And it''s nice having a ready pool of people to play with that you can reasonably assume aren''t asshats

Where did you read no battlegrounds for PvE servers? Battlegrounds are on BOTH PvP and PvE servers, ALL servers.
If this is true then I am keeping the hell away from the PvP servers. PvE all the way for me.
I had thought the PvP servers were team PvP (Horde vs. Alliance), with the only real difference from the PvE servers being that you didnt have to declare/consent to combat versus someone from the opposing faction. Guess I misunderstood it.

I realize they don''t want to be compared to an existing MMOG, much less do so themselves, but in reading the interviews and previews I''ve seen, it''s pretty clear that this is going to be a DAoC-style Realm vs. Realm game and not PvP.
PvP has bad connotations with many, many players.
Early UO, EQ, Lineage. PvP. Anyone near you could ""gank"" you. Not fun, especially as a newbie.
DAoC, on the other hand, has safe PvE areas that can take you all the way to level 50. You never have to take part in the RvR stuff. You can never be griefed or ganked while doing your typical ratcatcher lowbie duties.
You have to go to a special place and consciously decide to enter the RvR zones.
It''s not PvP.
I''ve always thought DAoC was actually 3 MMORPGs on each server with the option to do battle with players of the other MMORPGs if you choose to.
But not PvP.
I ramble, but my point is, if people that are interesting in the game, looking forward to it, and are relatively well-educated, game-wise, are this confused about WoW''s ""PvP"" element, they probably need to either make it known that this is of the DAoC school of ""PvP"", or clarify that it''s completely voluntary and that the enemy won''t be able to take you out while you kill bunnies for the rabbit''s foot quest.

I''m hoping to play to play on a full pvp server ala UO siege perilous, DaoC Mordred, etc. If they don''t have one I''ll be on a plain old Alliance vs Horde PvP server.
At least one character will be an orc. Hoowah Shadowclan!
